Biography

Suranjit Sengupta is a senior politician a high-ranking leader of Bangladesh Awami League, was born on 5 May 1945 in Derai Upazila of Sunamganj District. At the inception of his political career, he was a leader of lefty’s political party and thus began his political life with the strong connection with the leftist parties. Later, he was elected as a competitive candidate of the National Awami Party (NAP) in the Provincial Assembly in 1970’s National Election of Pakistan.

He was an Honored Freedom Fighter who actively took part in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. He was a vocal member of the Opposition Bench in the first constituent assembly of Bangladesh and soon after he led a party named the Ekota Party. Mr. Suranjit Sengupta joined Awami League in early 1990s.He, being a high-ranking politician in the Awami League, is considered as an influential face for the Hindu community in Bangladesh. Presently, Suranjit Sengupta is a Member of Parliament (Awami League) in the Jatiyo Sangshad, as well as the Chairman of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.

He took over as Railway Minister and resigned after 5 months on an allegation of bribery. Suranjit Sengupta was made a minister without portfolio after submission of resignation, a day after being accused by bribery scandal together with resigned as Railways Minister in April 2012.
