Biography
Alhaz Amir Hossain Amu was born on 1st January 1940 at Jhalakati Sub-Division under the then District of Barisal. He is the son of Mr. Md. Moazzem Hossain and Mrs. Aklima Khatun. Mr. Amir Hossain Amu was sent to the jail in 1954 for his direct participation in campaign of United Front. He was selected as the Convener of ‘Language Day Celebration Committee’ of “Sarbodolio Chattra Sangram Parishad” in 1959. He passed B.A. in 1965 from Barisal BM College and LL.B from Barisal Law College in 1968. During the period from 1959 to 1964, he carried over the position of Secretary and President respectively of Bangladesh Chattra League, Barisal District Branch. Later on, he became the Convener of ‘Sarbodolio Chattra Sangram Committee’ in 1962.
Mr. Amu was elected as Publicity Secretary of Bangladesh Chattra League Central Committee in 1965. In 1962, he participated directly in Democratic Movement and also took part in the Movement against the ‘Hamidur Rahman Shiksha Commission Report’ in 1963. He was also selected as the Convener of ‘Convention Movement’ in 1964. He was the member of the then East Pakistan Chattra League during 1958. In 1965 he headed the position of Publicity Secretary in 1965 and Treasurer of Central Chattra League in 1967. During the period 1959-1962, Mr. Amu was selected as General Secretary and President of Barisal Zilla Chattra League. In 1964, Mr. Amir Hossain Amu was Convener of “Sarbodolio Nirbachan Prochar Committee” of greater Barisal Zilla of Miz Fatima Jinnah Electoral Area. He was elected as Vice President of Barisal Brojomohan College Student Parliament during 1963 to 1964. He took a vital role in 6-points movements in 1966. He also took the responsibility of proclamation as a main molder of the Mass Movement of 1969.
After completion of Post Graduation Degree in History from Dhaka University, Mr. Amir Hossain Amu engaged himself in politics of Bangladesh Awami League directly alongside his law profession. He was elected in the Provincial Parishad Election from the Constituency of Barisal Sadar. During the Liberation War in 1971, Mr. Amu was carried out the responsibility of five districts- Barisal, Khulna, Patuakhali, Jessore and Faridpur as the chief of ‘Mujib Bahini’. In 1972, he was nominated as a founder senior Presidium member of Bangladesh Jubo League. He was elected as a member of parliament from the constituency area of Jhalakati and Razapur in 1973. He became the President of Jhalakati Awami League in 1972 and also was nominated as the Governor of Jhalakati District in 1975. He was imprisoned three years under the Special Power Acts during 1975 to 1978. But then Govt. failed to put up any case against him and he was Acts during 1975 to 1978. Mr. Amu was the Chairman of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League during 1978 to 1986. At the same time he held the position of Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League. Besides that Mr. Amu completed his role as the President of Barisal and Jhalakati District Awami League in 1980. He was the Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Central Committee during 1981-1992. He was elected as the Presidium Member of Central Committee of Bangladesh Awami League in 1992.
Mr. Amir Hossain Amu revealed his potential leadership in the Movement against the then Ershad Government from 1983 to 1990. He was again taken to the prison in 1996 for participation in the movement against unruliness Khaleda Government. He performed the holy Hajj for five times during 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 as the royal guest of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. During his political life he has made structural development and also built a lot of School, College, Madrasha, Road, Bridge, Culvert etc. To meet up the fundamental rights of the Natural Disaster affected people, several times he has taken various activities alongwith keeping himself close to the disaster people for serving them and to meet their constraint needs. Besides this, he has successfully done the responsibility of relief distribution and has rehabilitated the disaster victims as the Chairman of Bangladesh Central Awami League Relief Committee. Mr. Amu was the Chairman of 50 years celebration Committee of Bangladesh Awami League in 1999.
Mr. Amir Hossain Amu was elected parliament member as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 7th National Parliament election. During that time he was the Minister in the ‘Ministry of Food’ of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh. He was again elected as the Member of Parliament in 9th National Parliament Election on 29th December 2008 as nominated by Bangladesh Awami League. He was the member of the Parliament Standing Committee of the ‘Ministry of Religious Affairs’ and also the ‘Ministry of Liberation War Affairs’ in 9th National Parliament. Mr. Amu participated in 59th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in South Africa on 28 August 2013 as a Delegate for 10 days national visit. Mr. Amir Hossain Amu took over the charge as the Minister for Land and Disaster Management & Relief of the polls-time government on November 18, 2013. He was elected parliament member as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 10th National Parliament Election on January 05, 2014. He is a veteran political leader and earned love and respect of Parliament Members and people from all walks of life for his brilliant speeches in parliamentary debate on various national issues. He was sworn-in as the Minister of the present government on January 12, 2014 and was given portfolio of the Ministry of Industries.
